It’s officially sweet potato (aka yam) season! One of my favorite times of the year where root vegetables are at their peek. There are endless ways to cook them and incorporate them into recipes. These healthy roasted cinnamon sugar sweet potatoes are one of my favorite ways to prepare them!
It’s easy to make and brings out the natural caramelization of the of sweet potatoes. If you’ve ever been to an amusement park like Disneyland, it’s highly probable you’ve had a churro. There’s something about a warm dessert with cinnamon sugar, its simple but such a classic.
Using Unrefined Sugar
For this recipe I use coconut sugar instead of regular refined sugar. It gives it a depth of flavor that lends itself really well with the flavor of the sweet potato. I love cooking with coconut sugar, it’s similar to brown sugar but a little more subtle so it’s a great swap for granulated sugar. It’s perfectly sweet!

Is It a Yam or Sweet Potato?
Here in the US, we seem to use yam and sweet potatoes interchangeably. Making it more confusing to know the proper name for this wildly popular orange fleshed root vegetable. Although many restaurants or even grocery stores will refer to these as sweet potatoes, they are really called garnet or jewel jams. They have a brownish purple exterior and sometimes go by garnet or jewel sweet potatoes. With either name you should be able to find them easily in the produce section of a market or at farmers markets this time of year.
