This chocolate orange cardamom ice cream is one of my new favorite combos!
My Orange Creamsicle Ice Cream was such a hit that I wanted to make another variation that was just as delicious and easy to make!
It’s a healthy easy dessert that still offers a really delicious depth of flavor.
Cardamom is one of my favorite spices and pairs beautifully with chocolate and citrus notes like orange!
There’s no need for an ice cream maker to make this. I recommend starting this recipe the day or night before to freeze your oranges and chill a can of full fat coconut water.
Then you just place everything in a blend and place it in the orange peel cups or Tupperware for at-least 1 hour before enjoying!
This dairy free chocolate orange cardamom ice cream is great for get togethers, parties and things like outdoor BBQ’s!
When frozen overnight you can put them out in the sun to thaw and enjoy without getting too melty.
This recipe calls for cacao powder (raw version of chocolate) but you can also substitute with cocoa powder or carob powder for a caffeine free version.
The Secret Ingredients
To enhance the chocolatey flavor in this I recommend adding some Dandy Blend.
It’s vegan, gluten free and caffeine free! It’s an herbal blend primarily of dandelion and tastes just like like coffee/espresso powder.
It’s a nice healthy way to add a little depth of flavor to this dessert. You can use it make “coffee” drinks or ice creams using it without any of the caffeine.
The best thing is it helps boost energy levels without taxing the adrenals, is great for liver health and is my best tool when dealing with allergies. Since going caffeine free over 7 years ago, having a big of this Dandy Blend around has been life changing!
Another thing I love to add is some food grade wild orange essential oil. This adds an extra orange flavor as well as the extra health benefits that orange has to offer.
I use a few drops of wild orange essential oil.
Alternatively, you can add some orange zest, 1-2 teaspoons to get more orange flavor.

Yes! You can add 1/2 cup of Vegan Condensed Milk to this recipe to make it extra extra creamy!
Can I substitute the orange for anything?
Yes! This recipe works really well with frozen bananas, frozen strawberries or blueberries!
Can this recipe be nut free?
If you are nut free, I recommend subbing the cashew cream with 1 cup of
Vegan Condensed Milk
Are there any alternatives to the coconut products in this recipe?
To make this recipe coconut free, you can substitute the coconut cream for 1-2 frozen bananas or frozen dairy free milk ice cubes, I recommend cashew milk or oat milk.
Chocolate Orange Cardamom Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 4-5 frozen oranges peeled and halved
- 1 15 oz. can coconut cream, chilled overnight thick part only
- 1/3 cup cacao or carob powder
- 2 1/2 tbsp cashew butter
- 4 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp cardamom
- 1 tbsp dandy blend
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 drops orange essential oil (optional) food grade, I used DoTerra brand
- pinch of flakey salt
Instructions
- Peel, half and remove seeds of 4-5 oranges. Place in freezer bag or container and freeze for at least 5 hours.
- For the orange peel cups: Slice off the top of the orange and use a large spoon to remove all juices and interior flesh. (how to video on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok). Freeze hallowed out oranges for several hours as well.
- Once oranges are frozen, remove from freezer and allow to thaw for 10 minutes. Then add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth.
- Scoop into frozen orange cups or pour into airtight container to freeze for at least 1-2 hours before enjoying. You can freeze for up to 5 days before thawing for about 15-20 minutes before enjoying!
